Kirill Cheplygin, 35, who was sentenced to 19 years and two months in a strict-regime colony for a double murder committed with particular cruelty, has left for the war, the newspaper Gorod A reported, citing the mother of the murdered woman, Yekaterina.
Cheplygin signed a contract with the Defense Ministry on June 9 — the same day a court decision stripping him of parental rights took effect, the publication wrote.
In February 2025, Cheplygin attacked his ex-wife Yekaterina and her new partner Vyacheslav with a knife in a stairwell, then killed them on the street. According to sources, he did not stop even though Yekaterina's mother saw her daughter's death from a window. After the murder, Cheplygin returned home and attempted suicide, but relatives saved him.
Yekaterina decided to divorce after 10 years of the relationship due to constant control, as well as psychological and physical abuse, a friend of the murdered woman said. She left behind a five-year-old daughter. The murdered Vyacheslav was raising a 15-year-old daughter alone.
Yekaterina's relatives, upon learning of Cheplygin's plans to go to the front, created a petition demanding that he not be allowed to leave. More than 11,000 people signed the appeal. The petition's authors claimed that the murderer was 'never a patriot,' did not support the authorities, and simply wanted to avoid punishment. Yekaterina's relatives feared that after a pardon, Cheplygin would return and take her daughter.
