Canada has removed Anatoly Chubais, a former high-ranking Russian official and top manager, from its sanctions list, according to an official notice published on the Canadian government's website, Radio Liberty reported.
The notice states that the sanctions — an asset freeze and a ban on entry — no longer apply to Chubais. The document says Canada's interior minister received a petition from Chubais requesting his removal from the list, citing "compelling reasons" for the move, Ekho reported. Canadian authorities noted that for the sanctions regime to be effective, it must be fair. The nature of the reasons was not disclosed.
According to TV Rain, people residing in Canada and Canadians abroad are now permitted to do business with Chubais, though it is unclear whether he will actually take part in such transactions.
Canada was the only NATO country to include Chubais in its sanctions list. He was added in June 2025. Chubais left Russia in 2022 and currently lives in Israel. He has not yet commented on his removal from the sanctions list.
