Russian forces launched a massive overnight strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region on Wednesday, August 5, killing 15 people and injuring 42 others, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES). In the capital, one person died and 15 were injured; in the region, 14 were killed and 27 wounded.
In Kyiv, fires and destruction were reported in the Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi and Desnianskyi districts. Warehouses and other non-residential buildings burned. An ammonia leak occurred on the territory of an industrial enterprise; rescuers contained it, saying there was no threat to residents.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage to a private residential building in the Holosiivskyi district, under the rubble of which people may be trapped. According to his data, one person died in the city and at least 12 were injured. The SES reported 15 injured within the city limits.
In the Kyiv region, large-scale fires broke out at warehouses, logistics complexes and enterprises in the Brovarskyi, Buchanskyi and Fastivskyi districts. Rescuers are working at seven sites, the SES said. An air raid alert remains in effect in the region, and repeated strikes are not ruled out.
Local Telegram channels reported that the strike also hit a terminal of the Nova Poshta postal service in the Obolonskyi district. Mash reported that the military fired at least 35 missiles at Kyiv.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the attack targeted transport-logistics and distribution centers involved in "the storage and delivery of various weapons and military cargo, and in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles."
