Russian forces launched a massive overnight strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region on Sept. 1, killing nine people, according to Ukrainian officials and the national railway company.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service said eight people were killed in the capital and five more, including three children, were injured. The head of the Kyiv regional military administration, Timur Tkachenko, said the city of Boryspil was also hit, where a five-story residential building was damaged and 48 people were evacuated. Eight people were injured there, and one person was killed at an enterprise in the region.
The main strike targeted a railway depot and other facilities of Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia), the company's board chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said. According to him, the ballistic attack killed seven people, six of them company employees. One railway worker was hospitalized with injuries.
In Kyiv, the State Emergency Service said the Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts were hit. In the Solomianskyi district, a drone struck a residential building; firefighters rescued a man and freed a woman from the rubble. In the Darnytskyi district, fires broke out in two locations.
The evening before, on Aug. 31, Russian forces attacked the Kyiv region with drones, targeting warehouses in the Bucha, Brovary and Boryspil districts. Eight people were injured in the village of Pohreby. Regional authorities noted that the attack on the region had been ongoing for a fifth consecutive day.
Sources differ: the Kyiv City Military Administration initially reported three dead in Kyiv, while the State Emergency Service revised the figure to eight. Ukrzaliznytsia reported seven dead in the depot strike, six of them its employees, while independent sources count nine dead across Kyiv and the region.
