The aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and was destroyed near the village of Pratkunai, southeast of Kaunas and roughly 100 kilometers from the Belarusian border, at about 00:20 on September 15.
Nauseda said the incident was probably not a deliberate attack on Lithuania. In his account, the drone was intended to strike Ukraine but veered off course because of Ukrainian electronic warfare measures.
Speaking to LRT, the president added that such incidents could become more frequent. He said it was important to detect such aircraft in time, preferably while they are still over the territory of neighboring countries.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said earlier that the drone carried an explosive device. Bomb disposal specialists defused it. The electronic component of the unmanned aircraft is now being analyzed.
It is the first time a drone has been destroyed in Lithuania's history. The drone was shot down between Kaunas and Kaisiadorys, about 100 kilometers northwest of Vilnius.
Earlier this year, fighter jets downed drones in two other Baltic states: over Estonia in May and over Latvia in June. In both cases the drones were Ukrainian.
