Ukrainian authorities reported that a Russian strike on Kyiv in the early hours of August 1 killed nine people and wounded 30, including four children. Seven of the dead were in the Darnytskyi district, the hardest-hit area of the capital.
In the Solomianskyi district, a five-story residential building partially collapsed. Fires and damage were also recorded in the Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi and Pecherskyi districts of the city.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack affected seven districts of Kyiv, damaging 18 homes, a school, the Lithuanian embassy and infrastructure facilities. According to Zelensky, Russian forces launched 35 missiles at Ukraine overnight, 27 of them ballistic, along with 185 attack drones of various types.
"Only one ballistic missile was shot down tonight simply because there are no missiles for Patriots. And such a shortage of interceptors against ballistic missiles only encourages Russia to carry out such strikes against life," the Ukrainian president wrote.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the night in Kyiv as "hellish" and said Ukraine urgently needs additional air and missile defense systems, as well as interceptors.
Sources differ on the casualty count: Radio Liberty reports 30 wounded, while TV Rain and Ekho cite the State Emergency Service's figure of 28 wounded. Ekho's report also says fires and destruction were recorded in five districts of the city, whereas Zelensky spoke of seven affected districts.
