Poland's Internal Security Agency said it detained 63-year-old Ukrainian citizen Serhii P. on suspicion of attempting to kill an unnamed representative of Ukraine's defense industry. The man was arrested on August 5, but the agency announced the detention only now.

According to investigators, the failed assassination took place in the city of Irpin in Kyiv Oblast. Serhii P. placed an improvised explosive device under a car used by the potential victim. The explosion was to be triggered remotely, but the mechanism failed due to a malfunction.

After the failed attempt, Serhii P. traveled to Poland. Prosecutors charged him with attempted murder using explosives that he had obtained illegally. A court in Warsaw ordered him held for three months.

The investigation suggests Serhii P. acted on orders from Russian intelligence services.

This is the second such case in the past week. On August 13, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported the arrest of a Russian citizen whom authorities said was recruited to kill a Ukrainian and U.S. citizen in Warsaw. RMF FM journalist reported that the assassination was being prepared against Ukrainian rapper Albert Vasiliev, known as Kyivstoner. The FSB accused the musician of involvement in organizing a drone attack on enterprises in the Moscow region; he denies the charges.
