One person was killed and 16 others wounded in a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, calling it one of the heaviest strikes since the war began.
The attack hit five districts of the capital — Solomenskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi — the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reported. Fires broke out in residential and non-residential buildings, and cars caught fire. The blast wave damaged the above-ground entrance of the Lukianivska metro station, which was closed, Kyiv authorities said.
In the Bucha district of the Kyiv region, fires erupted at warehouses and a “logistics facility,” the SES said. Two people were reportedly injured.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, a Russian drone struck a passenger train, the Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia reported. Passengers had been evacuated beforehand. A train conductor sustained minor injuries.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed it had carried out a massive strike with missiles and drones against Ukraine. The ministry claimed the targets were military-industrial enterprises and logistics centers in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as infrastructure at the Pivdennyi port in the Odesa region.
In total, Russia launched 41 missiles and 125 drones of various types against Ukraine, the command of the Ukrainian Air Force said. Twenty-three missiles and 10 strike drones hit their targets. The main focus of the attack was Kyiv.
Figures varied: Zelensky reported one dead and 16 wounded. The Kyiv City Military Administration said one dead and eight wounded. The SES reported fires in five districts of Kyiv; Mayor Vitali Klitschko said blazes had broken out in the Solomenskyi district, including on the roof of a supermarket.
