Most of the injured were students in a university dormitory in the Desnianskyi district. Nine people were hospitalised, three of them in serious condition, Klitschko said.

Rescuers found the body of the deceased in a destroyed three-storey non-residential building in the Dniprovskyi district, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the strikes hit the grounds of a university and the area around it — a campus, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station and residential buildings. City Telegram channels reported that the State University of Trade and Economics was damaged.

The Southern Bridge across the Dnipro was again one of the targets. The crossing and the metro infrastructure located on it were damaged, the Kyiv City State Administration said. Traffic on the bridge was halted entirely, and service on the red and green metro lines is restricted.

The Southern Bridge had been struck repeatedly before, most recently on 22 October. Russia's Defence Ministry has confirmed the attacks, asserting that the crossing is used to move troops and supply military cargo to Ukrainian forces in the Donbas. The Kyiv city military administration also reported damage to a residential building in the Desnianskyi district, where, according to preliminary information, people may be trapped inside.

On the evening of 26 October, Russian forces also struck the Novobavarskyi district of Kharkiv with multiple rocket launchers. According to mayor Ihor Terekhov, two people were killed and four injured. Apartment blocks and private houses, a children's educational institution, company buildings and cars were damaged.

Against the backdrop of the attack, Zelensky said delays in the supply of air-defence missiles from partners were unacceptable. According to him, amid a constant threat, artificial delays with air-defence systems contribute to terror.

Since September, Russian forces have regularly attacked Kyiv with drones and missiles. Senior Ukrainian officials told The Economist that Russia plans to paralyse the capital before winter sets in, in order to increase public tension and destabilise the country's political situation.
