President Volodymyr Zelensky said a fire broke out in the damaged building. Photos circulating on social media showed people trying to climb out of a smoke-filled window.
According to Zelensky, rescuers were still fighting the fire and searching for people who may have been inside. No figures on the exact number of dead and injured were given.
Zelensky also said a pharmaceutical company and gas stations were attacked in Kyiv the same day. In Dnipro, he said, a strike hit a business center. Strikes on civilian facilities and enterprises were recorded in other regions of the country as well, according to the Ukrainian president.
"Russia must answer for all of this and feel real consequences," Zelensky said. The Russian military has not yet commented on the strike on the Academy of Sciences building.
