Russian forces launched a massive missile strike on Kyiv overnight on July 6, killing 11 people and wounding 46, including five children, according to Ukrainian officials. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one of the wounded died in hospital, and 27 people were hospitalized. The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, also reported the attack.
Damage was recorded in at least four districts of the capital. In the Podilskyi district, a 21-story residential building was partially destroyed between the third and fourth floors. In the Darnytskyi district, debris hit a 25-story building at the fourth-floor level, trapping people on upper floors; a fire broke out on the upper floors of a 30-story residential building in the same area. In the Holosiivskyi district, a five-story building caught fire. In the Obolonskyi district, debris fell on non-residential structures, igniting a warehouse and one building.
In the Kyiv region, one person was killed and 15 were wounded, including a nine-month-old girl, local authorities said. Damage was reported in the Bucha, Vyshhorod, and Brovary districts, affecting private homes and civilian infrastructure.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it struck military-industrial enterprises and fuel-and-energy facilities in Kyiv "in response to terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime." The ministry also reported hitting military airfield infrastructure.
Odesa and Kherson also came under attack overnight, local officials said. In Odesa, a 23-year-old man was wounded and private homes were damaged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the eve of the strike that intelligence had warned of a planned massive attack. "This is in Putin's style — right after America's Independence Day and before the NATO summit in Ankara," Zelensky said. The NATO summit is scheduled for July 7–8.
Sources differed on the casualty figures: Klitschko reported 11 dead (one died in hospital), while Tkachenko and Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported 10. Klitschko and Tkachenko said 46 were wounded, while the State Emergency Service said 43. Russia's Defense Ministry and Ukrainian authorities also gave conflicting accounts of the target: Moscow said it struck military industry and energy facilities, while Kyiv said residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were hit.
