Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a series of explosions in the city and urged residents to stay in shelters as Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of August 1.
According to the State Emergency Service, nine people were killed and 28 wounded, including four children. The Kyiv City Military Administration said the injured included teenagers aged 13 and 17.
The aftermath of the strike was recorded in five districts of Kyiv. In the Solomenskyi district, a five-story residential building was partially destroyed, killing two people and injuring eight, including two children. Rescuers evacuated 35 people from the upper floors and extinguished the fire.
In the Darnytskyi district, seven people were killed and 14 injured, two of them children. Administrative and non-residential buildings caught fire there, and cars and private houses were damaged. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a non-residential building, ambulances, and a film studio territory caught fire. In the Dniprovskyi district, a store was damaged, and in the Pecherskyi district, four private houses and outbuildings were damaged.
In the Kyiv region, the attack sparked a fire at an industrial enterprise, injuring two people. In Kherson, Russian forces dropped bombs on an educational institution, injuring at least five people and significantly damaging the building. In the Poltava region, rescuers extinguished a fire at a warehouse that broke out after the attack; no casualties were reported.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it had carried out a massive missile and drone strike overnight, during which "enterprises of the military-industrial complex and logistics centers of Ukraine in the city of Kyiv and the Kyiv region were hit."
