Russian forces attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones overnight on July 2, killing 13 people and wounding more than 80, according to Ukrainian authorities. Seventy of the wounded were hospitalized.
In the Darnytskyi district, a nine-story residential building was partially destroyed, with rescue crews clearing debris. In the Desnianskyi district, another nine-story building was damaged, trapping residents. Multi-story buildings were also hit in the Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Pecherskyi, Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and other districts of the capital.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, an ambulance substation was struck, wounding at least five drivers and medics. A hotel roof and a market caught fire in the same area. Fires also broke out in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.
Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported damage at more than 30 locations across the city. Drones approached Kyiv from multiple directions, he said, with the first attack warning issued at 8:43 p.m. on July 1.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the strike used "long-range precision weapons" in response to "terrorist attacks" on civilian infrastructure. According to the ministry, the targets were military-industrial enterprises and fuel-and-energy facilities in Kyiv and the region, as well as military airfield infrastructure in five Ukrainian regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was in Dublin on the evening of July 1, warned of a possible massive strike on Ukraine, citing intelligence data. Monitoring resources reported active Russian reconnaissance of targets in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The number of Kyiv residents sheltering in the metro increased significantly overnight.
Sources differ: Russia's Defense Ministry claims the strike hit military and energy targets; Ukrainian authorities report the destruction of residential buildings, an ambulance substation and a hotel. Casualty figures also vary: Ukraine's Interior Ministry reported 56 wounded at one stage, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 86 were wounded and 70 hospitalized. Russia's Defense Ministry did not provide data on civilian casualties.
