Russia launched a massive combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, killing 13 people and wounding about 90, with Kyiv declaring July 3 a day of mourning.
Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed 524 targets — 48 missiles and 476 drones — out of a total of 74 missiles and 496 drones launched by Russian forces, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Destruction was recorded at more than 30 locations across all districts of Kyiv, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration. Direct hits struck 20 residential buildings, and about 100 homes were damaged in total, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said. In the Darnytskyi district, a nine-story building partially collapsed, and rescuers freed seven people from the rubble.
An ambulance substation in the Shevchenkivskyi district was hit, injuring at least five drivers and medics. In the same district, a fire broke out on the roof of a hotel and at a market, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the strike used "long-range precision weapons" in response to "terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime." The ministry claimed it hit Ukrainian defense industry enterprises, energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, and military airfield infrastructure in several regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a possible massive attack on Kyiv on the evening of July 1, citing intelligence data.
