From mid-September, Spotify will begin adding an 'AI Persona' label to profiles of artists whose public persona is suspected to be created by artificial intelligence. The badge will appear on the artist's profile, in search results, and next to the name in playlists, according to the company's blog.
Spotify said the label will help listeners understand that 'the artist's persona may be generated by artificial intelligence and is not related to a real person.' The company stated that a genuine connection between an artist and a fan can only be built on trust and authenticity: listeners dislike when a profile appears to belong to a real person but turns out to be an AI creation.
Creators of AI musicians will be able to voluntarily add the badge through the Spotify for Artists service. In other cases, moderators will decide after a review using AI tools. If Spotify independently assigns the 'Likely AI persona' label, the profile owner will be notified and can accept or appeal the decision.
Music by AI personas will not be included in editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default. Users will not see such artists in curated playlists unless they follow them. In the coming months, listeners will also be able to report profiles they believe are AI-generated.
The label applies only to the artist's public image, not to how the music was made. It does not automatically mean the songs are fully or partially generated by a neural network: Spotify uses separate labels for disclosing AI involvement in track creation.
