The united press service of St. Petersburg's courts said Shamayev was placed in custody under Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code, which covers propaganda of terrorism on the internet.
According to investigators, on May 1, 2022, Shamayev posted a comment containing the phrase "Honor of the nation!" beneath a post featuring an image depicting individuals involved in terrorist activity.
He was detained on September 22. He has pleaded not guilty. It is unclear where the comment he is accused of posting was published.
At the time of publication, Shamayev was a member of the St. Petersburg Bar Association; his status was later suspended.
As noted by the outlet Caucasian Knot, Shamayev is originally from Chechnya and received his lawyer's status on June 25, 1998.
