Trump wrote that the purchase of Belarusian potash would cost less than buying fertilizer from Canada, a development he said should please American farmers and livestock producers.
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko responded to the statement, saying Belarus would be unable to supply potash fertilizer to Western markets because all available volumes are already under contract.
"Many people here are shouting: 'Ah, potash!' Even if we wanted to supply somewhere else, to other markets, to Western markets, we simply do not have those volumes, everything is under contract," he said.
In December last year, US authorities announced the lifting of sanctions on Belarusian potash. At the same time, Washington removed restrictions on the airline Belavia, Belinvestbank and the Development Bank of Belarus.
In exchange, Lukashenko pardoned hundreds of political prisoners. Among those released were human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, former presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, Maria Kolesnikova, one of the leaders of the 2020 protests, politician Sergei Tikhanovsky and others.
