Russia's Defense Ministry said air defense systems "intercepted and destroyed" 397 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight, with strikes reported across 14 regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, Lipetsk, Samara and Saratov oblasts, the Krasnodar region, annexed Crimea and the Sea of Azov. The Moscow Times, citing the ministry, reported 480 drones destroyed.
A fire broke out at the Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region after drone debris fell on the facility. The regional operational headquarters said five people were injured and receiving medical care. Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) temporarily suspended operations at Gelendzhik airport due to the attack.
In the Samara region, a drone and missile threat alert was in effect overnight and lifted by 5:05 a.m. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said in the morning that "one of the industrial enterprises" in the region had been hit, without specifying which, and that casualty figures were being verified.
Proekt Astra, citing OSINT analysis and residents of Syzran, claims the Syzran refinery is burning — one of the region's largest enterprises, part of Rosneft, processing 7–8.5 million tons of oil per year. According to the Telegram channel Exilenova+, the plant sustained "at least three hits," targeting the crude distillation unit and oil storage tanks. Authorities have not officially confirmed this. A fire at the Syzran refinery was reported on August 4 and previously on July 12, after which the plant halted operations.
Two more people were injured in the town of Zadonsk in the Lipetsk region, Governor Igor Artamonov said. According to him, men aged 50 and 28 were taken to hospital; four private homes, a car and a power line were damaged in the town. One drone fell on an apartment building under construction in Lipetsk.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said nine drones heading for the capital were shot down on approach. The Ukrainian side did not comment on the August 8 attacks on Russian refineries.
