Ukrainian drones attacked an oil refinery in Slavyansk-na-Kubani in Russia's Krasnodar region overnight on June 28, killing one person, according to regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev.
Kondratyev said a fire broke out at the refinery, and a power line and gas pipe were damaged. Several homes in the city were also damaged. Another person was injured in the village of Trudobelikovsky in the Krasnoarmeysky district, where drone debris fell on private houses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Telegram that Ukrainian forces struck two Russian oil refineries overnight — one in the Krasnodar region and one in the Yaroslavl region. He did not specify the name of the plant in the Yaroslavl region, but Ukrainian media reported it could be the Slavneft-YANOS facility. Zelensky said the strikes are part of an operation to pressure Russia into ending the war.
Yaroslavl region governor Mikhail Yevrayev reported a drone threat overnight and said traffic was blocked on the road from Yaroslavl toward Moscow. He did not mention any strike on a refinery. The drone threat was later lifted and traffic restored.
The Slavyansk refinery is a large independent oil processing plant with a capacity of about 4–5 million tonnes of crude per year, providing around 9% of oil refining volume in the Southern Federal District. According to The Insider, NASA's FIRMS satellite monitoring system detected a large area of thermal anomalies at the plant, indicating intense burning.
Russia's Defense Ministry reported that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 213 Ukrainian drones overnight over 12 regions in southern and central Russia, as well as over Crimea and the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
The Slavyansk refinery has been repeatedly targeted — in March, April, and May 2024. After the last attack, the plant suspended operations.
