The monument was installed at the intersection of Kurashova and Poyarkova streets in the city center. It depicts two servicemen — Dmitry Egorov, call sign "Suntar," and Nikolai Romanov, call sign "Ronin," who reportedly died on the same day, September 9, 2023, during a Ukrainian counterattack on the village of Novomayorskoye in the Donetsk region.
Romanov, 43, went to the front as a volunteer in early 2023; before that he worked as deputy head of the economic development department of the Namsky district administration. Egorov, 47, volunteered for the war in 2022 and worked at the municipal utility company in the village of Suntar. Egorov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia. His wife and mother were notified of his death in advance — before official confirmation, Ulus Media reported.
Previously, the site held a memorial to Poles and Lithuanians exiled to Yakutia in the 19th century, as well as to victims of political repression in the 1940s. The memorial began to be dismantled in 2023: first, commemorative plaques disappeared from five stones, then the stones themselves were removed. The city administration could not explain the disappearance of the plaques, while the department for the protection of cultural heritage objects attributed the demolition to the memorial's lack of protected status.
In May, Yakutsk's chief architect Semyon Sergeev announced plans to install a new monument at the site, at the time referring only to a monument to Egorov. Later, a figure of Romanov was added to the composition. In March, a book dedicated to both servicemen was presented in Yakutia, and it was reported that a feature film would be based on it.
