Case summary

According to the investigation, Aleksanyan committed embezzlement of Tomskneft property, as well as shares in refining and oil producing companies of VNK. He was arrested on 6 April 2006. On 06.04.2006 the Simonovsky District Court of Moscow found signs of a crime in Vasily Aleksanyan's actions and gave its consent to the Prosecutor General's Office to prosecute the executive vice-president of Yukos. On 22 January 2008, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation refused to satisfy the appeal of the lawyers of former Yukos vice-president Vasily Aleksanyan and release him from custody for health reasons. In response to the lawyers' demands to hospitalise the defendant in a specialised clinic, Aleksanyan was transferred to the hospital of the pre-trial detention centre. There, according to his lawyers, he contracted tuberculosis. In addition, Aleksanyan became practically blind in detention. Three Directions of the European Court of Human Rights were issued on Aleksanyan's case - on 29 November, 6 December and 21 December. According to these rulings, Aleksanyan should be provided with urgent medical assistance in a specialised medical institution. Despite this, Aleksanyan was denied transfer to a hospital. On 06.02.2008 the Simonovsky Court, taking into account the serious illness of Vasiliy Aleksanyan, decided to suspend the proceedings in the case. At the same time, the court left Vasiliy Aleksanyan's defence motion to change his preventive measure without satisfaction. 08.02.2008 Vasily Aleksanyan was transferred from the infectious diseases ward of the Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention centre to a hospital. 14.07.2008 Moscow's Simonovsky Court resumes the trial against Vasily Aleksanyan to extend Aleksanyan's arrest. 8.09.2008 Moscow City Court reduced the defendant's detention period by one day. 20.10.2008 Moscow's Simonovsky Court extended Aleksanyan's arrest until 22 January 2009. On 8.12.2008, the court decided to release Aleksanyan from custody if bail in the amount of 50 million rubles is paid. On 30.12.2009 Vasily Aleksanyan was released on bail in the amount of 50 million rubles. In June 2010, the case was dismissed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. 3.10.2011 Vasily Aleksanyan died.
