Case summary

He is a resident of St. Petersburg, a machine operator at a plant producing reinforced concrete products. In February 2023, he was taken into custody on charges of damaging property by setting fire to a Rosgvardiya warehouse and traffic police cars, as well as attempting to set fire to Interior Ministry cars. The Telegram channel “VChK-OGPU” reports that during the investigation Baranov claimed that he was guided by his anti-war stance during the arson attacks. No later than March 2023, Baranov’s charge was reclassified to committing a terrorist act. He was later reported to have also been charged with manufacturing explosives, participating in a terrorist community and treason. On 10 October 2024, he was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime colony.
