Case summary
Correspondent of The Wall Street Journal. He was detained on March 29, 2023 in Yekaterinburg, where he was working on a material about the attitudes of the public to the PMC Wagner, after which he was taken to Moscow, where he was taken into custody. The materials of the case are almost completely classified. According to the publication where the journalist works, he was under surveillance even before his detention. Yevgeny Smirnov, a lawyer for First Department, stressed that this is the first criminal case of espionage against a foreign journalist in the Russian Federation. On July 19, Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a strict regime colony. On August 1, 2024, Gershkovich was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States.
