According to the investigation, being dissatisfied with the current political system and the war in Ukraine, from December 2023 to April 2024, he "proactively" established cooperation on a confidential basis with a representative of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) via Telegram and "offered to assist foreign states in activities knowingly directed against the security of the Russian Federation". In the course of correspondence, having chosen a pseudonym, he expressed his readiness to assist the SBU representative by committing subversion or arson of state or military facilities on the territory of the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass. He received a response "from a representative of a foreign state" and agreed to "search for important information in the fight against Russia". Fulfilling instructions of "intelligence-type", Krechetov recorded and sent to the foreign party video recordings and images that had information about military, transport and law enforcement facilities in Novokuznetsk.

On 2 August 2024, he was detained and then taken into custody on charges of confidential cooperation with foreigners: according to the investigation, he was in contact with a representative of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) . The video of his detention in the shopping centre was published on 14 April 2025. In May of the same year, the case was sent to court.
