On 4 April 2022, Ovchinnikov was fined 30,000 roubles under the article pertaining to the discrediting of the Russian army (Part 1 of Article 20.3.3 of the Administrative Code) due to a comment made on social media. The comment referenced mobile crematoria in the Russian army and stated: "Mothers will at best get back the urn with the ashes of their sons killed in battle, unless they will be listed as missing, so as not to burden the authorities with 'all sorts of trifles'".

Full summary
On 6 and 13 March 2022, Ovchinnikov was detained during protests opposing the war with Ukraine. Subsequently, he departed Russia with his family, apprehensive of potential persecution by the authorities. On 28 June 2023, law enforcement officials interrogated his sister and nephew and conducted a search at the residence previously occupied by his family, which had since been sold to a new owner, who was also summoned for questioning.
