Case summary

World Press Photo laureate, author of a scandalous project in which he set fire to abandoned village houses and took photographs. He left Russia before the day of the planned protest action. Tkachenko was going to remotely set off blue and yellow smoke bombs built into air conditioners outside the windows of an apartment near the Kremlin, but law enforcement officers broke into the apartment. Special services officers later told Tkachenko that they began following him immediately after he bought the remote-controlled GSM sockets. Tkachenko's relatives were searched and threatened that they would also be suspects in the case.
