The incident occurred near Murtazovo station in Kabardino-Balkaria, close to Beslan, according to the Telegram channel 112, REN TV and Mash. Citing sources, 112 and Baza said the attack unfolded as one of the prisoners was being taken to the toilet from the last carriage: he seized an assault rifle from the convoy and opened fire.
According to Mash and Baza, the FSI officer died on the way to hospital. Three others were wounded. The prisoner himself was killed by return fire, 112 and Baza reported.
112 and REN TV described the events differently: a stop valve was pulled in the carriage, after which the prisoners seized the convoy's weapons and barricaded themselves inside, refusing to hand over the wounded. Security forces surrounded the carriage, and emergency services and special forces arrived at the scene. According to 112, no one managed to escape.
According to 112, the carriage with the prisoners being transported was attached to the train at Terek station. The incident occurred after the train had passed Beslan.
A TASS source in the FSI denied reports of a riot. According to the source, one of those being escorted attacked an officer and killed him. The agency has no official comment. The FSI, the Interior Ministry, the Investigative Committee and the authorities of Kabardino-Balkaria have not publicly reported the incident.
Sources differ: 112, REN TV and Mash reported a riot involving the seizure of weapons and barricading inside the carriage; Baza and TASS, citing a source in the FSI, described an attack by a single prisoner on the convoy while being taken to the toilet. TASS reported that there was no riot but confirmed the death of an officer of the agency.
