Editor-in-chief Kirill Kiselyov announced the closure in the publisher's Telegram channel. He did not give reasons for the decision.

Kiselyov said books the team had worked on in recent months will still be released, but by other publishers.

He compared the end of the publishing house to the ending of a book. A good ending, he said, is one that everything before it inevitably led to, while Individuum's ending turned out to be "sudden, but not unexpected."

Individuum was founded in 2015 and specialized in contemporary documentary literature and nonfiction, among other genres.

In 2023, Individuum and Popcorn Books came under the control of the Eksmo company.

In 2025, employees of Popcorn Books and Individuum became defendants in a criminal case over "extremism." According to the prosecution, they sold queer literature, including the novel "Leto v pionerskom galstuke" (Summer in a Pioneer Tie). The case was prompted by a decision to sell off remaining copies of banned books after the "LGBT movement" was banned in December 2023.

Shortly after the case was opened, Popcorn Books announced its closure; the publisher later relaunched under the name Soda Press. In 2026, former Popcorn Books employee Artyom Vakhlyayev, former sales director Pavel Ivanov and Individuum executive director Dmitry Protopopov were sentenced to four years of imprisonment, suspended.
