A 56-year-old resident of Khabarovsk died after being detained by officers of the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia), according to the regional prosecutor's office and the local news outlet DVHAB.ru.
According to preliminary data from the prosecutor's office, on July 31 Rosgvardia officers responded to a call about a public order violation. The security forces claim the man offered active resistance, prompting them to use physical force and special means. The man died at the scene.
The pro-law-enforcement Telegram channel Mash reported that the man was detained on Grazhdansky Lane, forced to his knees, and beaten. The channel later said the officers were called because of a disturbance and that the man had tried to flee. The outlet Ostorozhno, Novosti reported that during the detention the man lunged at the officers with a hammer and attempted to spray pepper spray.
DVhab, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the man died near Fabrichny Lane. A female reader of the site said he lay on the asphalt with no signs of life, surrounded by many Rosgvardia vehicles. Amur Mash published a video showing at least two security officers beating the man.
The Investigative Committee's office for the Khabarovsk Krai and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast said a forensic medical examination found no bodily injuries on the deceased that could have harmed his health or led to death. According to the agency, the cause of death is not criminal in nature.
