The measure was imposed under Part 2 of Article 294 of the Criminal Code, which covers interference in the work of the investigation. According to defense lawyer Irina Biryukova, the pretrial measure was changed because, in the investigation's account, the accused violated her obligation to appear. Biryukova specified that the charge in Yegorova's case had not changed and that no new accusations had been brought against her.
The criminal case against Yegorova on charges of smuggling cultural valuables was opened in the fall of 2024. She was placed under house arrest at the time. In November 2025, Gozman said his wife had left Russia "completely legally" — by some accounts for Israel, where he said their daughter lives, and by others for Germany.
The case stemmed from an attempt to export family silver and nickel-silver tableware. According to the investigation, the "criminal group" included Gozman himself, his wife and a driver who took her to a border checkpoint. The investigation has not officially named the driver.
"My guilt consists in the fact that I asked for things to be taken out that had not passed an examination by the Ministry of Culture. At the same time, both I and my wife were convinced that these things possess neither cultural nor serious material value," Gozman said, commenting on the case.
Pyotr Furta is also a defendant in the case alongside Yegorova. He is charged with smuggling cultural valuables and interference in the work of the investigation. He was first sent to a pretrial detention center, then released under house arrest, but was later taken back into custody. His case is currently being heard by a court in the Pskov region near the border with Latvia.
Leonid Gozman himself left Russia after a series of administrative arrests. In July 2024, he was sentenced in absentia to eight years and six months in a general-regime colony in a case over military "fakes," and in November 2025 he was given six years in a colony on a charge of "justifying terrorism." Combined, the sentences totaled 10 years of imprisonment.
