Romanian military divers defused two Gerbera-type drones in the country's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, acting Defense Minister Radu Miruță said. The unmanned aerial vehicles were spotted about 90 nautical miles from the port of Constanta, near the Neptun Deep gas field.
The drones were spotted from a civilian vessel conducting work in that part of the sea. The wing of another device was also found there; it posed no danger and was brought ashore. Both drones were destroyed in controlled explosions.
Romania's Defense Ministry contacted the Ukrainian side, which said the drones did not belong to it. Russia uses Gerbera-type drones in its war against Ukraine.
During the full-scale war, Russian drones have repeatedly violated Romania's airspace. From July 24 to 26, the Romanian Air Force shot down three drones that entered the country's airspace during massive Russian attacks on Ukraine. On July 27 and 30, the situation repeated — F-16 fighters were scrambled, but the drones flew back to Ukraine. Romania's Prosecutor General's Office established that one of the downed drones was a Shahed-type.
On the night of May 29, a Russian drone fell on the roof of a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati on the border with Ukraine. A fire broke out and two people were injured. After that, Romania closed the country's only Russian consulate general in Constanta and expelled the consul general. Moscow responded in kind, closing Romania's consulate general in St. Petersburg.
