Russia's Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted and destroyed 494 Ukrainian drones overnight. The drones were shot down over the Leningrad, Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Kursk, Tver, Smolensk, Oryol, Pskov, Tula, Novgorod and Rostov regions, the Krasnodar Territory, the Moscow region, and over the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said the drone attack caused a fire in the industrial zone of the city of Kirishi. He said 62 drones were shot down over the region overnight but gave no further details. The governor's figure differs from the Defense Ministry's count.
The outlet Astra, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the fire likely broke out at the Kirishinefteorgsintez (KINEF) oil refinery, the largest refinery in the European part of Russia and part of Surgutneftegaz. There has been no official confirmation of a strike on the plant. The Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova also reported an attack on the facility.
The Ukrainian channel Supernova+ published a video showing an explosion on the upper floors of an apartment building. According to Astra, air defense activity can be heard in the footage, which the outlet said was filmed in Kirishi. No casualties have been reported.
The Kirishi refinery processes about 18 million tons of oil per year, roughly 7% of Russia's total refining capacity. The plant halted operations in early May following a drone attack.
