In the early hours of September 5, Russian forces fired ballistic missiles and 167 drones at Ukraine, with about half being jet-powered, according to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. By morning, over 120 drones had been shot down, with strikes recorded in 23 locations.
Russia's Defense Ministry reported hitting the Kametstal metallurgical plant in Kamianske and the Dnipro Metallurgical Plant in Dnipro. It also claimed attacks on logistics centers and an electrical substation in the Mykolaiv region, a dry cargo ship in the port of Chornomorsk, a fuel depot and distribution sites near Hostomel, and a radio and electronic intelligence center in Brovary. The ministry said all targets were used in the interests of the Ukrainian military; there is no independent confirmation of these claims.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, four people were killed and five wounded in a strike on an industrial enterprise, according to regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha. In Boryspil, Kyiv region, a nine-story residential building was partially destroyed, injuring two. In Mykolaiv, Russian forces attacked a shopping center, wounding two.
The strike came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces would not conduct air strikes on Russia during the visit of American negotiators, and called on Moscow to reciprocate. According to sources in several brigades cited by Ukrainska Pravda, Ukrainian defense units were ordered to observe a ceasefire along the front line from midnight September 5 through the end of September 8. Sources cited by RBC-Ukraine gave a different timeframe—through the end of September 7—and said no agreements with Moscow had been reached at that point.
Following the Russian strikes, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Main Communications Directorate said that a ceasefire "cannot be unilateral or asymmetric," as it would create a threat to Ukrainian servicemen.
Strikes also continued on Russian territory. The Defense Ministry reported that air defense forces shot down 53 drones overnight. The Belgorod region's operational headquarters said more than 12 people were wounded.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to hold talks in Moscow today and travel to Kyiv tomorrow. Donald Trump said his representatives are carrying a new proposal to end the war to both sides.
