President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Russian drone hit the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, opposite St. Sophia's Cathedral, and was directed straight at the office of the agency's head, Oleksandr Poklad.
Ukrainska Pravda, citing sources, reported that Poklad was not in his office at the time of the strike. Zelensky said he had spoken with the SBU chief and instructed him to prepare an "adequate, tangible and, if possible, mirror" response to Russia.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported five people injured in the attack on the city, without providing details. Zelensky also said there were casualties but did not give a number.
The strike came ahead of an expected visit to Russia by US negotiators — President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner. According to TASS, they are due to arrive in Moscow on September 5 and travel to Kyiv the following day.
