The Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg ordered Voloshin held in custody under Article 275 of the Criminal Code, which covers high treason. Judge Nelly Baraeva issued the ruling, Mediazona reported, as cited by OVD-Info and Current Time.

FSB officers detained Voloshin on the morning of October 22 as he left the 14th police station on Baumana Street in Yekaterinburg, where he had gone to collect a phone seized in an earlier criminal case over "discrediting" the army.

Two friends who had accompanied him to the station, both witnesses in the "discrediting" case, were also detained by FSB officers and released only at midnight, still in the status of witnesses.

According to Mediazona, Voloshin was struck on the body and head after his arrest, his hands were bound with handcuffs and he was suffocated with plastic bags. He was brought to court showing signs of torture: marks from handcuffs on his arms, red stripes from a bag on his neck, marks of blows on his face and bruises on his stomach.

Mediazona found that the new case may be linked to a photograph on Voloshin's phone, which he took while working at the Novator plant, a facility tied to the defense industry.

By the time of his detention the taxi driver had already faced two penalties in "discrediting" cases. In February 2025 he was fined 30,000 rubles over six images on VKontakte featuring "caricatures of the servicemen fighting in Ukraine." In August 2026 he was fined 150,000 rubles in a case of repeated "discrediting" (Part 1 of Article 280.3 of the Criminal Code).

That criminal case was opened in April over two VKontakte comments published in 2025. In one of them, as OVD-Info reported, Voloshin wrote that Putin had no grounds to attack Ukraine and that the Russian army had been given "a kick up the ass" instead of the promised capture of Kyiv in three days. The second was posted in the Typical Yekaterinburg public group under a post about a banner bearing the letter Z on the building of the Ural State University of Economics.

During his April detention, OVD-Info reported, Voloshin was also tortured. He was given electric shocks "near the buttock," suffocated with a punctured bag, thrown face-first into gravel and threatened with having a finger cut off to gain access to his messages. The current detention is not the taxi driver's first this year.
