Case summary

On 3 June 2015, the Syktyvkar City Court of the Komi Republic found Russian nationalist Yuri Avdoshkin guilty under part 2 of article 280.1 of the Criminal Code (public calls for separatism committed with the use of the Internet). According to the investigation, Avdoshkin, "acting for separatist reasons", in comments to an article on one of the Internet sites posted a text containing public calls for the withdrawal of the Komi Republic from the Russian Federation. The case was considered under special trial procedure, as the accused declared his agreement with the charges. He was sentenced to 200 hours of compulsory labour and released from punishment by amnesty.
