Case summary
A resident of Sevastopol (the largest city in Crimea and a major port on the Black Sea). On 17 August 2021, Bekirov's home was searched. He was detained and interrogated, after which the court decided to take him into custody on charges of organising activities of a terrorist organisation. The reason was his alleged involvement in the activities of the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir. Human rights activists believe that the banning of this party as a terrorist organisation had no grounds. However, this decision gave grounds for the prosecution of hundreds of residents of the Russian Federation and Crimea as terrorists solely on the basis of party activities: meetings, study of literature, involvement of new supporters. On 31 May 2023, Bekirov was sentenced to 17 years in a strict regime colony.
