The prosecution was triggered by a text the man shared on a social media platform. The message essentially stated that the celebration of May 9 was “absurd, shameful, and disgraceful.” The text also contained phrases that were deemed offensive to people for whom May 9 — Victory Day — is a sacred holiday and a symbol of remembrance of the Soviet people’s heroic struggle against fascism.
In court, Belik pleaded guilty and claimed he had posted the text by accident, adding that he considers May 9 a holy holiday.
