Case summary
Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, political scientist, former host of the Crimean Tatar TV channel ATR, teacher. On 4 September 2021, he was searched at his home, detained and held without procedural status for about a day. According to his own words, he was kept for a long time in an unknown place in handcuffs and with a bag on his head According to the case materials, he was detained on 5th of September. The court sent Dzhelyal to custody on charges of sabotage and possession and smuggling of an explosive device. Initially, Dzhelyal was charged with aiding and abetting sabotage, but then the charge was reclassified. In the pre-trial detention centre, Dzhelyal was placed on a preventive register as prone to extremist and terrorist offences. In March 2022, Dzhelyal was not released from the pre-trial detention centre to attend his father's funeral. On 21 September 2022, he was sentenced to 17 years in a strict regime colony. On 28 June 2024 it became known that Dzhelyal together with nine other people were handed over to Ukraine.
