Case summary
Journalist, founder of the Svobodnaya Buryatiya Foundation. According to the "Empire of Truth" Telegram channel, she was prosecuted under the article on dissemination of deliberately false information about the Armed Forces with the motive of political hatred (item "e" part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). In February it was reported that Garmazhapova was put on a wanted list and arrested in absentia. On 10 November 2023, she was sentenced in absentia to seven years' imprisonment.
On 23 October 2025, law enforcers came to search Garmazhapova's relatives in St. Petersburg in a new criminal case. She was accused of evading her duties as a "foreign agent". On 5 March 2026, she was sentenced in absentia in this case to ten months' imprisonment, taking into account the previous sentence to seven years and three months' imprisonment.
In November 2022, the activist was added to the list of "foreign agents". After that, she was twice fined in administrative cases for failure to fulfil the duties of a "foreign agent".
