Case summary

Magomed Khazbiyev is an Ingush opposition activist. In January 2015, he was put on an international wanted list due to suspicion of car theft and weapons possession. Arrested on 11 January 2018 on charges of illegal possession of weapons and insulting a government official. On 24 May 2018, Khazbiyev was charged with a incitement of hatred or humiliation of dignity on the grounds of belonging to the social group of a government official. On 27 November, he was sentenced to two years and 11 months in a open prison. On 26 February 2019, the term was reduced by three months due to the cancellation of the sentence in terms of incitement to hatred. On 25 July 2019, Khazbiyev was released.
