Case summary

Detained on 23 May 2015, charged with illegal manufacture and possession of weapons, incitement to hatred and organisation of activities of a terrorist organisation in connection with alleged involvement in the Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has nothing to do with terrorism. He was taken into custody. In June 2015, the defence managed to secure his release under house arrest. On 25 February 2016, at the request of the FSB, he was again detained: the representative of the agency motivated the demand by the fact that Magomedov changed his place of residence several times and did not warn the investigation about it, although his relatives claim that he did. The charge of incitement to hatred was dropped, but Magomedov was also charged with involvement in the activities of an extremist organisation and preparation for violent seizure of power.

On 3 July 2017, he was sentenced to nine years in a strict regime penal colony. He was released in December 2024.
