Case summary
In October 2017, Iritov and an organization he headed planned to hold a rally against the sale of lands of Volniy Aul, a resort village in the territory of Nalchik. Before the rally, according to internet media outlet Kavkazsky Uzel, law enforcers came to Iritov's home and beat him and his family. The case materials said that the activist allegedly strangled the enforcer despite the fact that he had no hands. According to the version of the investigation, during the visit of law enforcers before the rally, the man insulted and attacked the deputy head of the Department of the Center "E" Hamidbi Gubashiev, the latter allegedly received a split lip and a concussion. According to the activist's daughter, the criminal case was opened after the brothers Iritovs refused to withdraw a statement about the beating of their family from the police. The proceedings in the case of Aslan Iritov were stopped on his appeal, however, the court of cassation in March 2021 decided to reconsider this decision. On September 2, 2021, the court sentenced Aslan Iritov to two years of suspended sentence with a probation period of two years. He was found guilty under the article on the use of violence dangerous to life or health against representatives of the authorities (part 2 of article 318 of the Criminal Code). In the case of insulting a law enforcer (Art. 319 of the Criminal Code), the activist was sentenced to a fine of 20 thousand rubles, but was released from its payment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. In September 2023 it became known that the ECHR awarded Iritov 26 thousand Euros in compensation.
