Case summary

Activist, student of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics at Moscow State University, author of the Protest MSU Telegram channel. On 2 June 2022, he was detained; on that day, at least four searches were conducted - at Moscow activists' and journalists' homes, as well as at Ivanov's parents' home. The activist himself was serving 25 days of administrative arrest under the article on repeated violation of the established procedure for arranging a rally (part 8 of article 20.2 of the CAO) - the arrest was due to end at 6:30 pm on 2 June. He was charged with dissemination of deliberately false information about the activities of the armed forces on the grounds of hatred (point "e" of part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code) and was detained until the trial. On 3 June the court decided to take Ivanov into custody.

Among the evidence collected by the investigation, there is a statement from an assistant professor of Moscow State University, who claims that Ivanov "participated in financial frauds" and "defends all political scum of society".

At the end of July 2022, Ivanov was visited in the pre-trial detention centre by a man who introduced himself as an FSB officer and suggested that Ivanov "could uncover some criminal network to get a lesser sentence". After one of the hearings in January 2023, Ivanov was beaten by an escort. His letters from the pre-trial detention centre do not reach their addressees due to censorship. On 7 March 2023, Ivanov was sentenced to eight and a half years in a general regime colony.

The Investigative Committee did not initiate a criminal case in connection with the beating. In November 2023, it became known that Ivanov was not given letters at the pre-trial detention centre, and his letters were not sent to the outside either. In addition, Ivanov is denied visits from his mother. Later, Ivanov received the letters.
