Case summary
A coordinator of the human rights project "Siberia Legal". He was taken into custody in February 2020. At that time Kamynin was charged with distribution of drugs on a large and particularly large scale.
On 4 January 2022, Kamynin was released from the Kemerovo pre-trial detention centre, and then immediately detained and charged with extortion. According to the investigation, he extorted 20,000 roubles from a Kemerovo resident.
The drug case was suspended for a while due to lack of evidence, but then the case was resumed.
On 29 May 2023, Kamynin was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony in the drug case.
In September 2023, Kamynin said that he was tortured in the pre-trial detention centre. According to his testimony, the assistant head of the pre-trial detention centre, Aliuskin, repeatedly ordered his subordinates to beat the human rights defender with a stun gun and drag him on the floor into the cell, as Kamynin writes. In at least one case, the reason for such treatment was the man's refusal to hand over legal literature to the pre-trial detention centre's staff before taking him into the cell. The staff refuses to accept care packages sent to Kamynin on the pretext that he is currently en route to court to consider an appeal against his sentence.
No later than 2025, a new case was initiated against Kamynin on the grounds of fraud in receiving payments.
