He worked in the anti-drug service, then in the private security business. In 2024 he signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On 5 June 2024, he was taken prisoner near Donetsk. He was accused of being a mercenary. On 24 April 2025, Cardenas Montilla was sentenced to nine years in a strict regime penal colony.
