Case summary

A student at Sortavala College and a member of the Russian Civil Alliance movement. He was charged with a terrorist attack on the railway. His lawyer stated that Klunya was charged based on receiving a personal message with instructions for making an explosive substance and the testimony of two witnesses. Those close to him claim that he was not involved in the arson. Later, it became known that Klunya was also accused of high treason, confidential cooperation with a foreign state, and public calls to terrorism or its justification. Regarding the actual terrorist attack charge, he was initially accused of organising it, but the charge was later reclassified to preparation for the organisation. His defence lawyer was charged with non-disclosure. On 31 May 2024, Klunya was sentenced to 14 years in a strict regime colony. On 30 August 2024, the court of appeal increased the sentence from 14 years to 19 and a half years. At the same time, the court considered the organisation of the terrorist attack as a completed act and removed the application of the article on preparation for a crime.
