Case summary

Bartender. Detained in June 2023 for setting fire to a relay cabinet in Naro-Fominsk, Moscow Oblast. At the time, it was reported that during a "conversation" with operatives, he stated that he had committed arson on his own initiative and that no one had directed his actions. Malina's mother later said that after his arrest he was brought to an unknown police station, where an FSB officer was present and beat Malina, after which he was taken, presumably to the Domodedovo City District Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. There they continued beating him, demanding his phone password. "They offered me three options for the course of events. The first — I am sent to fight in the Wagner Group, the second — they find explosives in my possession that were used to blow up power lines, as I look similar to the suspect, the third — that I confess to all arson," — "Mediazona" quotes Malina's story, recorded in the lawyer's interview. Some time after the detention Malina was taken to the temporary detention centre of the police department at the station "Moscow-Leningradskaya", where he was found to have numerous bruises. According to Malina's mother, in a conversation with the lawyer, the FSB investigator admitted that the man was "all blue" when arrested.

Initially, a case was brought against Malina for putting the railway tracks in an unserviceable condition. In November 2023, it became known that he was charged with participation in the activities of the Freedom of Russia Legion. Later, when Malina's case went to court, it turned out that there were ten episodes in the case under different articles: sabotage, attempted sabotage, preparation for sabotage, preparation for a terrorist act, training in terrorist activities, participation in a terrorist community, participation in a terrorist organisation, training in sabotage activities, participation in a sabotage community and state treason.

Regarding the charge of arson of the relay cabinet, the mother in a conversation with Mediazona claims that the FSB investigator, "talking to the lawyer, said that they know that he (Malina — OI) did not do it." According to her, the investigation found the arsonist, but the charges were not dropped against Malina, and later in his case appeared the preparation and attempted arson of other relay cabinets. On 23 May 2024, Malina was sentenced to 25 years in a strict regime colony.
