On 14 April 2021, he was detained after a search in a case involving minors in activities dangerous to their lives. On the same day, the court imposed on Metelkin a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain activities, which implied, inter alia, the inability to leave the house for more than one minute per day. Later, the court of appeal instance allowed Metelkin to walk for two hours. The investigation scheduled Metelkin for interrogations on all working days until the end of May.

On 28 May, it became known that a slander case had been initiated against investigator Ekaterina Zhizhmanova, who was in charge of his case but was suspended at his request. On 22 April Metelkin applied for Zhizhmanova's dismissal due to psychological pressure: he said that the investigator called him a "sexual hero" and reported that she had found Metelkin's Instagram account. The journalist also said that Zhizhmanova touched him with her hands.

On 12 April 2022, sentenced to two years of corrective labor through wage docking, the preventive measure was canceled. He left Russia and declared wanted.
