Case summary

In June 2017, a volunteer of Alexei Navalny's headquarters in Cheboksary was prosecuted for calls for extremist activity and incitement to ethnic hatred for publications in the social network VKontakte. A search was conducted on 17 June, hard drives, three knives and a disc with a film were taken, then Alexei was questioned by the Federal Security Service. The closed trial began on 4 September. On 18 September he was sentenced to two years and three months in a penal colony.

In August 2016, he was convicted under part 1 of article 20.3 of the Administrative Code (propaganda or public display of Nazi paraphernalia or symbols) for reposting an image with a swastika, intended to draw a parallel between Putin and Hitler. The Novocheboksarsk City Court fined him 1,500 roubles. On 22 January 2019, the case was dismissed due to the partial decriminalisation of Article 282 of the Criminal Code. He was released on 4 February.
